The two words get used interchangeably, but they describe genuinely different vehicles — and which one suits you depends mostly on where you are going.
A campervan is built inside a panel van, so the living space and the cab are one shell. It is shorter, narrower and markedly easier to park, which counts for a lot on Welsh single-track roads and in small seaside car parks. Ours is Jessie, an Auto-Trail Expedition 67 Flex: four berths, automatic, a lithium leisure battery and an electric drop-down bed over the rear lounge.
A motorhome is a coachbuilt body on a van chassis. You get noticeably more room — separate seating and sleeping areas, a larger washroom, more storage — at the cost of length and width. Most of our fleet is coachbuilt, which is worth saying plainly: if you searched for campervan hire picturing a VW-style camper, we are a motorhome fleet with one true campervan in it. That is usually good news, because you get more space for the money.
Take the campervan if there are two of you, you plan to move on most days, and you are heading somewhere with tight lanes and small car parks — the Llŷn, the Gower, the Pembrokeshire coast villages. Take a coachbuilt motorhome if you are a family, you tend to stay put for a few nights at a time, or you simply want more room when the weather turns. Wales gets weather.
Both are under 3,500kg, so a standard UK car licence covers you with no extra entitlement. Jessie is automatic, as are six of our seven motorhomes.
