Cookie Policy

Our Cookie Policy
Why Knott Hire ("we", "our", "us") is a trading name of Onward 2 Upward Ltd. This page explains the small files (cookies) and similar browser storage our website uses, what each one is for, how long it lasts, and how to change your mind.
The cookie banner
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you are happy for us to use cookies for analytics and advertising.
- Accept turns on Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and our Google Ads measurement and advertising.
- Reject keeps all of them switched off: no analytics or advertising cookies are set. The website works just the same, except that maps, videos and our Facebook posts are hidden.
Nothing in the "only if you press Accept" list below is set until you press Accept. Before you choose, or if you press Reject, Google Analytics and Google Ads still receive a basic signal that a page was viewed, without any cookies (Google calls this Consent Mode). It stores nothing on your device, and Google uses it only to estimate overall visitor and advert numbers. Microsoft Clarity does not load at all unless you press Accept. We remember your answer for a year so we don't ask on every page.
Changing your choice
Use the Cookie settings link at the bottom of any page to open the banner again and choose differently. You can also delete cookies in your browser settings; the banner will then ask you again on your next visit.
Cookies and storage we always use
These are needed for the website to work as you'd expect. They hold no name, email address or payment details.
- wkh_analytics_consent (Why Knott Hire): remembers whether you pressed Accept or Reject, so the banner doesn't keep appearing. Shared with our booking site so you only have to answer once. Lasts 1 year.
- wkh_pv, wkh_first_seen (browser storage, Why Knott Hire): counts how many pages you have viewed and when you first visited, so offers and notices only appear when they are meant to (for example, not on your first page). Stays on your device and is never sent to us. Lasts until you clear your browser data.
- wkh_popups (browser storage, Why Knott Hire): remembers which notices or offers you have already seen or closed, so we don't show them again too soon. Stays on your device. Lasts until you clear your browser data.
- wkh_popups_closed (browser storage, Why Knott Hire): remembers which notices you closed during this visit. Lasts until you close the tab.
- knotty_pill (browser storage, Why Knott Hire): remembers that you have closed (or used) the "Need any help?" chat prompt, so it doesn't keep popping up. Lasts until you clear your browser data, or the end of the visit if you just ignored it.
- wkh_sid (browser storage, Why Knott Hire): a random visit number that lets our own visitor counts treat one visit as one visit, including when you move on to our booking site. It is not linked to you. Lasts until you close the tab.
Cookies and storage we use only if you press Accept
- wkh_attr_ft (Why Knott Hire): remembers how you first found us, for example from a search advert or a link on another website, so we can tell which advertising actually brings people to us. Shared with our booking site. It holds no name, email address or booking details. Lasts 90 days.
- wkh_anon (browser storage, our booking site's visitor counter): a random number that lets our own visitor reports recognise a returning browser. It is not linked to your name or bookings. Lasts until you clear your browser data.
- _ga, _ga_… (Google Analytics): counts visitors and shows us how people use the website, so we can improve it. Lasts up to 2 years.
- _gcl_au and related _gcl_ cookies (Google Ads): tells us when someone who clicked one of our adverts goes on to make a booking. Lasts 90 days.
- IDE, test_cookie and similar (Google advertising, set on Google's own doubleclick.net domain): lets Google show our adverts to people who have visited our website before (remarketing), and measures them. Up to 13 months.
- _clck, _clsk and Microsoft's MUID (Microsoft Clarity): shows us, in anonymous form, where people click and scroll, so we can fix pages that are confusing. _clck lasts 1 year, _clsk 1 day, MUID 1 year.
Maps, videos and Facebook
Some pages show a Google map, a YouTube video or our Facebook page. These load from Google and Facebook when the page opens, and those companies may set their own cookies. If you press Reject, we hide them instead. Google and Facebook explain their cookies at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies and facebook.com/policies/cookies.
Links to our booking site
If you arrive from an advert or a link with tracking details in the address (for example gclid or utm_source), we copy those details onto the links to our other pages and to our booking site, so a booking can be matched to the advert that led to it, even if you look around first. This doesn't store anything on your device.
Changes to this policy
If we change the cookies we use, we will update this page.
