Wales is widely regarded as the finest road-trip destination in the UK, and a luxury motorhome provides the ultimate way to explore it. Imagine waking up beneath Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, watching the surf roll into the Gower that very afternoon, and parking up above a secluded Pembrokeshire cove by evening.
Forget about packing and unpacking, stressful hotel check-ins, or rigid itineraries. With a luxury motorhome serving as your mobile hotel, kitchen, and panoramic viewpoint, you can embrace pure freedom on the open road.
Based in Bridgend, South Wales, Whyknott Hire is a local, independent operator located right on the M4 corridor between Cardiff and Swansea.
Pristine, Modern Fleet: Our luxury vehicles are fully equipped with onboard heating, hot water, proper kitchens, and comfortable bedding configurations tailored for groups of four to seven people.
Complete Peace of Mind: Every motorhome hire includes comprehensive insurance and a thorough, personal handover before you depart. This ensures you set off feeling entirely confident, whether it is your first time behind the wheel or your fiftieth.
Direct Booking Benefits: Because you book directly with us instead of through an impersonal marketplace, you avoid hidden booking fees and middle-men. Enjoy transparent pricing, a dedicated local team, and a spotless luxury motorhome ready for your adventure.
Strategically positioned just off the M4, our base places you within effortless reach of all that Wales has to offer: the Dark Skies of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) are less than an hour north, the Gower Peninsula and Three Cliffs Bay lie to the west, and the majestic peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) are easily accessible for extended tours.
Wales is built for slow travel. Featuring three national parks, two breathtaking coastlines, and winding mountain routes connecting them all, the country can be crossed in a single morning while offering endless discovery.
While May through September marks the peak season—with school holidays booking out well in advance—the true insider secret is travelling during the shoulder months. Late April, May, September, and early October offer uncrowded roads and peaceful campsites while seasonal businesses remain open. Because all our motorhomes feature robust onboard heating, spring and autumn touring is exceptionally comfortable.
The A470: Serving as the scenic spine of Wales, this route runs from Cardiff straight through the Brecon Beacons all the way to Eryri (Snowdonia).
The A487: Hugs the dramatic west coast of Wales.
The A465: Known as the Heads of the Valleys road, providing swift east-west connectivity.
Note: Every vehicle in our fleet can be driven on a standard UK car licence. Simply take narrow single-track lanes steadily and utilise designated passing places.
There is no automatic right to wild camp in Wales, and local coastal car parks are increasingly monitored overnight. Fortunately, you do not need to take risks: our interactive map features over 900 verified Welsh campsites spanning every corner of the country. We recommend booking pitches ahead for peak school holidays, while off-peak travellers can easily roam and select stops day by day.
Couples and small families enjoy an impressive selection, as six of our eight vehicles comfortably sleep four:
Anna & Alys: 2026 Auto-Trail F-Lines, with Alys featuring a luxurious rear island bed.
Bella & Bethan: Bailey Adamo twins, each equipped with two convenient electric drop-down double beds.
Luna: Features a fixed over-cab double, a rear double, and an unusual five travel seats.
Jessie: Our compact, boutique campervan option.
Robyn: Sleeps six with an electric drop-down family bed.
Crystal: Our largest flagship model, offering seven berths and seven dedicated travel seats in a classic family alcove layout complete with permanent rear bunk beds.

Pick your dates, collect your vehicle from Bridgend, and let Wales unfold from the comfort of your own home on wheels.
Wales packs an extraordinary amount of landscape into a compact country, while its winding routes make journeys feel wonderfully expansive. Heading north on the A470 places you in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) within an hour of our Bridgend base, unlocking waterfall country around Ystradfellte, Pen y Fan, and the distant Elan Valley reservoirs. Travelling west via the M4 leads you straight to the Gower Peninsula, followed by Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, famous for their breathtaking coastal paths and beaches. Further north, Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Llŷn Peninsula make for a fantastic extended week-long trip, though they can feel rushed over a standard weekend.
Long Weekend (3–4 Days): Ideal for exploring a single region in depth, such as the Beacons, the Gower, or the Wye Valley.
One Week: Allows you to link the dramatic south coast to Pembrokeshire and loop back through the central mountains.
Ten Days or More: Recommended for comfortably incorporating North Wales into your itinerary without spending your entire holiday behind the wheel.
Licence Requirements: Every motorhome in our fleet weighs under 3,500kg, meaning a standard UK car licence is all you need—no special driving entitlements required.
Automatic Advantage: Six out of our seven motorhomes feature automatic transmissions (with Robyn serving as our only manual model), which significantly eases the stress of hill starts and narrow lanes.
Navigating Welsh Roads: Wales features many single-track roads, particularly in the west and north, equipped with passing places. Drive them at a relaxed pace and always use the pull-ins to let traffic pass.
Wild camping is generally not permitted in Wales without explicit landowner permission, and local council car parks strictly prohibit overnight sleeping. In practice, this means staying at established campsites, certificated locations, and approved pub stopovers, of which there are hundreds nationwide. Booking pitches ahead is essential during July and August. To help plan your journey, our interactive map of campsites across Wales plots sites nationwide to let you map out your route in advance.
The Sweet Spot (May, June, and September): Enjoy long daylight hours, quieter roads, and much easier campsite availability.
Peak Season (July and August): The busiest and highest-priced months of the year.
Winter Touring: Perfectly comfortable thanks to robust onboard heating, though note that some coastal campsites close for the season between November and March.

Why not hire? I`ll tell you why not. £70 extra to pick it up early..and it wasn`t even ready. We got sucked in with the good-looking website, and went ahead and paid up front, oh my god what a scam we fell for. Gave me the key it broke in my hand..I had to get some superglue I had in my van and he botched it back together, not a good sign. It fell apart again out in mid wales. Drove it to pick up the family, felt extremely shaky, everything rattled, on stopping, 3 lights had fallen out of the ceiling hanging on by the cables, some woodwork had shaken out of the floor and was loose, found knobs missing, stinking toilet hadn`t been cleaned/disinfected, stale piss smell from everybody who`d been there before us, upholstery minty and dirty, good job we covered everything in blankets. The sink would not empty, even on flat ground, and leaked on the floor internally. I checked the tyre pressures and 3 were around 3.4BAR, with one rear at 4.6BAR..dangerous. Clearly nothing checked, no maintenance. I reset them before we went anywhere and still the boneshaker was like a broken rollercoaster. The owners were notified as we were on a motorway as this was unbearable, and asked if we could swap it for another as it felt unsafe..they said no. We decided to carry on and get to Wales as we had been been looking forward to a break..We couldn`t do the trip we wanted to as we couldn`t bear to suffer the shaking any further.. so we stopped in Wales. Thought we would watch the TV. Nope. Can`t watch it unless the bed is lowered from the ceiling as it is obscured?? Then the Tv and lights went out in the evening after ten minutes...no more energy in the battery despite it saying it had 39% charge.. So headtorch on and that was that. Never got the safety certificate we were promised and found a gas bottle leaking so had to isolate it. They were informed of every issue up until this point, and we just got a message saying `customer service is not available`. We had to bring it back a day early as it was unbearable, could`t use it to travel where we had planned, due to it being so uncomfortable, it was truamatic, our poor dogs were shaking with fear whilst the awful vehicle was in motion..and no lights or tv after about ten minutes (found I had to run the engine for ten minutes to get 10 minutes of light). Brought it back a day early, asked the guy to drive it to see what I meant about poor ride quality (even the seat shook whilst driving) and he didn`t want to know. Emailed the owners, they spoke to us as if we were idiots, I suggest you get rid of your condescending attitude. Oh, and get rid of the wording on your website about "luxury" and "comfortable" these don`t apply at all, this is misrepresentation. Rang up to try and resolve our concerns, the guy Mr Knott started shouting over me and putting the phone down. What a child. Disgusting, absolutely disgusting behaviour. Avoid at all costs, this is an honest review. Their website reviews are from their friends which is questionable and scammy. Today we chased them up as they had said they would get a professional to inspect it, and send us a report (Ha what report) however this clearly hasnt happened as I checked and they`ve already re-let this motorhome. You`re dealing with a company that have now barred my number as they have had my money and think I`m going to quietly go away. I`m not. They ripped us off.Posted on Google![]()

We had a great experience renting a motorhome for a week whilst touring North Wales. It was our first time touring like this and the flexibility of being able to pull up at a campsite and be ready to go, well stay, within minutes of arriving at our pitch made life really easy. I would have given five stars but did experience some issues receiving responses to some queries I had in advance of our holiday. I used the excellently designed user portal to make these queries but did not receive a reply. When a customer follows the "contact us" process, I would expect a response is provided. Fortunately this did not detract from our overall experience and my query related to whether bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets)) was provided in the van as it was not that clear in my booking detail. It turned out bedding was not provided and we were prepared for this outcome and made a quick trip to the local superstore. The only other issue we experienced was that the vehicle was not supplied with a full fuel tank (only 3/4 full). I took a picture just after collection and returned it with a little more than 3/4 of a tank. The WhyKnott team were happy with this. In summary, I would return again and would recommend this company to others. The website and vehicle fleet overview features were really helpful. The app was also very good but the WhyKnott team really need to check for any customer queries.Posted on Google![]()

Hired this camper for a trip around Scotland to do the NC500, they were clean and well maintained and faultless for the entire trip. The wind out awning on the Fiat was such a great addition expanding our usable space when at the campsite. Chris was a pleasure to deal with to answer any queries I had thought our trip and had us all in stitches with his witty replies. Will not hesitate to hire again with these guys! Thanks for a great trip.+9Posted on Google![]()
