Wales packs an enormous amount into a small country, and the roads make it feel bigger still. Head north on the A470 and you are into Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) within an hour of our Bridgend base — waterfall country around Ystradfellte, Pen y Fan, and the Elan Valley reservoirs beyond. West on the M4 takes you to the Gower, then Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, where the coast path and the beaches are the draw. Further north, Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Llŷn Peninsula are a longer haul — comfortable in a week, rushed in a weekend.
A long weekend suits one region: the Beacons, the Gower or the Wye Valley. A week lets you link the south coast to Pembrokeshire and loop back through the mountains. Ten days or more is when north Wales becomes realistic without living in the driving seat.
Every motorhome in our fleet is under 3,500kg, so a standard UK car licence covers it — no additional entitlement needed. Six of our seven motorhomes are automatic (Robyn is the one manual), which takes most of the anxiety out of hill starts and narrow lanes. Wales does have plenty of single-track roads with passing places, particularly in the north and west. Take them slowly and use the pull-ins.
Wild camping is not generally permitted in Wales without the landowner’s permission, and most council car parks prohibit overnight sleeping. In practice that means campsites, certificated locations and pub stopovers — there are hundreds across the country, and booking ahead genuinely matters in July and August. May, June and September are the sweet spot: long days, quieter roads and far easier site availability. July and August are the busiest and priciest. Winter touring is perfectly comfortable in a heated motorhome, though some coastal sites close between November and March.
